AI GENERATED CONTENT WARNING!

SEO Warning about AI generated content on websites

Why you shouldn't be so quick to implement AI generated content without proper guidance

As a marketing and web design expert, it is often that I see companies relying on technology to implement changes that save money and decrease the need for staff. This is not always a bad thing, in fact, many experts would even recommend technological advancements, including AI, except, for when it comes to AI generated content. Unfortunately, this also includes AI generated images, which as some may already know, have recently undergone public scrutiny and vigorous lawsuits for using original work from credible online sources and artists in a way that violates copyright laws. See… ChatGPT-maker braces for fight with NewYork Times and authors on “fair use” of copyrighted works.

The AI Generated Content Problem

The AI Generated Content Problem

One of the main problems with AI generated content is that since it is not the original source, AI generated works cannot be owned by any one entity that adapts it. This means that as an open source, AI generated content produced for the purpose of providing information on any given website, could potentially be replicated and used by anyone else. Furthermore, it cannot be protected, patented or copyrighted.

When ChatGPT was first introduced as an open source, several app developers and online platforms jumped on the AI bandwagon. These companies used AI as a business building tool, offering the public the ability to manage and create multiple works with the help of AI. As a result, many companies now use AI in their software programs, app development, site features, design programs, and more; leaving companies that are using AI in this form, vulnerable to copyright infringement lawsuits and/or the inability to copyright or patent and protect their own work.

Furthermore, fueling the problem, is the growing unauthorized use of AI data and its introduction into the public before the states have a chance to adapt laws that protect the public and original sources. States are now being tasked with implementing regulations and deciding on what constitutes as copyright infringement when it comes to AI generated works. As you can imagine, this has led to lawsuits and regulations that are slowly being carried out and will start to impact AI generated content users overtime. This of course may change as more and more companies become burdened and laws are modified; but as of now, it poses a great risk to AI generated content users who try to publicize their work or protect it.

How Will AI Generated Content Impact Your Website?

Last on my list… Another growing complication for many website owners who use ai generate content, such as blog writers or ai generated images, is that search engines like Google won’t rank AI generate content high. According to Google’s E-E-A-T search ranking standards, Google ranks website content on Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness; but it is impossible for AI content to become an Expert or authority figure, knowledgeable on any given subject when it provides information secondhand. The reason this is important, is because if your website content is not recognized as coming from an authoritative perspective, your content will not rank high and in turn neither will your website pages on Google. This means you will have little to no foot traffic being directed to your website… and that, is a mayor website problem.

The Solution To Using AI Generated Content

AI is a very powerful tool that we are still learning much about. Like all things, AI can be used to advance if used in a responsible manner. AI generated content should be used as a research option and a databank for generating ideas, not as a tool for replacing knowledgeable staff such as online content writers or designers. While the technology may seem promising, there are still many problems surrounding AI that can place a company in serious legal turmoil.
