What are backlinks?

Backlinks are one of the leading reasons affecting how businesses are ranked on Google. A backlink is basically a link that leads back to your website. The more backlinks you have leading back to your website, the higher you are likely to rank with Google.

Side Note* You are going to want to also look into domain authority and the content relevance of these sites as Google considers these factors also.

1. Domain Authority

– Has to do with how high on Google a website ranks; the higher the authority, the more likely that website is to have a stronger impact on your website ranking score. Having these types of websites link back to your site is more important than having a lower ranked website backlinking to your website. Here is a free tool you can use to test the domain authority a website has: moz.com.

2. Relevance

– Has to do with how close in content a website is to your website. Is the information of your website closely related to the content on the website you are linking to?

Side Note* You shouldn’t pay for backlinks; Google looks for natural connections, not paid ones.

Combining domain authority with relevant websites is Key!

The objective is to have lots of backlinks linking to your website that are ranked high on Google and that have relevant information or are similar in content to the content on your website.

How to create backlinks for your website or business?

Here is the “not so good news”… you have to put in the time and work. Backlinks are easy to generate but require a lot of time and patience. This will not happen overnight; so, strap on your flip-flops, grab a comfortable chair and get to work.

Ways to create High ranking and relevant backlinks:

One good way to create backlinks is to contact industry leaders (in your field of business) via email or other and ask them you provide expert insight on your topic (products or services) and then create a well written blog mentioning the experts’ advice or insights, and link to their names, their websites, Facebook or other social medias. Once done, publish your post and then email them with a link to your post inviting them to share it on their social networks. This will not only generate more traffic to your website, but it will also increase the chances that those who are interested will link back to your site.

Another way to easily create backlinks is by searching for quality, high ranking blog posts and commenting with a link back to your website.

The comment would have to be relevant and long enough, but this is also a good way to add backlinks to your site. Make sure that the blog site is set to DoFollow. This is sometimes advertised by the website you are linking to. A DoFollow site tells the search engine bot on their site, to follow all of the links on their page. If a link relation is set as Do-Follow, then you will get a good boost over (SERP) Search Engine Results Pages.

Three… if you are a blogger, you already have an avenue for creating easy to share backlinks to your site.

If you are not a blogger, consider if writing relevant content once a week and sharing it on social medias is right for you? Creating content that people want to read, and share is the easiest way to build backlinks to your website.

Side Note* Always fill out as much information about your business, website, products or services as you can. Make sure you are also including keywords you want to rank for in all of your posted or shared content. Include as many photos about your products, offers, or services as possible and make sure to name each one using keywords you also want to rank for, as this will help those searching find you faster.
